This thesis presents a comparative case study about floor slabs as part of a reinforced concrete framed construction. The main intention is to work out the effects on this type of construction by varying column positions, design of edge stiffening and type of support at the end of the structure. The different slab systems are classified schematically. The FE-analysis for each slab structure provides plots of its deflection, demonstrating a sensitive behaviour depending on the boundary conditions mentioned above. The German standard for constructions of reinforced concrete, DIN 1045, chapter 17.7.2 limits the ratio of span to depth in order to restrict the deflection of slabs without binding beams. It is shown that the deflection of slabs can be reduced by applying edge stiffening. In return the depth of the slab can be reduced without exceeding the limits of vertical deformation according to DIN 1045.
