In the field of civil engineering and architecture, sustainable planning and life cycle management are rarely practiced. The common planning process is based on experience and is seldom documented or determined at the beginning of the planning process. The complex issue of sustainability with its many aspects is then often regarded only accidentally. Especially the cooperation between the different specialist planners is not coordinated. Additionally there are several information losses between distinct life cycle phases, e. g. between planning and building or between building and utilisation. Besides that, the origin for these problems is mainly the typical design process of buildings. This process is characterised by the lack of effective tools to control the planning phase in order to achieve not only a suitable building, but a building with an optimised life cycle value. The aims are enhanced building quality, optimised life cycle costs, improved sustainability and enhanced characteristics in the dismantling/recycling phase.
