There is a long-established tradition of collective grazing systems in the alpine area of Germany dating back to the 5th - 6th centuries. Southern Bavaria is one of the few regions where this tradition has survived. Indeed there adverse natural conditions such as low temperature, pronounced relief, steepness, etc limits the ability to intensify use of the land. The use of collective alps provide a range of important ecological and social functions for society such as preservation of habitat for the conservation of endemic plants and animals, maintenance of recreational areas with aesthetic and cultural values, etc. The aim of this thesis is to provide an analysis of the significance of the collective alps for the region and its agriculture. For this purpose attention is paid to the advantages of the collective alps for the participating farmers. Furthermore it provides an extensive description of the collective alps and it carries out an estimation of utilisation intensity. As a result recommendations are made to ensure sustainable use and the survival of these common lands.
