Wind turbines offer preferred impact spots for lightning strikes due to their height. These strikes might lead to severe damage in material components and electronic circuits. In this thesis, the lightning protection system of wind turbine rotors has been analysed as these are the most endangered components. Main emphasis was given to the attachment and breakdown processes at the blade. These processes have been analysed in the high voltage laboratory using original samples of wind turbine blades. Amongst others, the influence of the glass-fibre shell on the lightning protection system’s efficiency could be identified. The results allow for a more effective realisation of the lightning protection system of wind turbine rotors.
