The basis for this dissertation is the vision of future healthcare, which focuses on the patient and allows for effective, efficient, and seamless care and control. However, the domain characteristics complicate the necessary information integration. The use of networked IT across sectors and institutions provides essential opportunities: Therefore, it will be examined which attributes are necessary for IT systems, in order to meet the above mentioned requirements. A literature analysis forms the basis for the identification of requirements for such systems. These are instantiated in a prototypical implementation which is characterised by the architectural concept of active medical documents. It will be shown that agent based systems are especially suited for healthcare which is notably determined by flexibility and dynamics. Finally, future perspectives for information systems are derived.
