The existing paper describes the realization of a complete concept for a non-contact operation of an infotainment system in motor vehicles. Of main interest thereby is the visual interaction by means of dynamic hand and head gesture. By means of the ergonomic utilization of human capacities, the driver shall be provided with an interaction as natural and intuitive as possible. Based on very positive results of profound usability studies a gesture optimized operation environment is developed. This proves to be widely intuitively operable as well as less distracting due to usability tests made during the process of development and finds broad acceptance. Furthermore, a new technology is introduced, which enables a robust automotive recognition of hand and head movements. It is based on feature extraction by means of infrared distance sensor arrays and delivers high recognition rates under real time conditions with an extremely low requirement for computing power.
