Naturally occurring antimicrobial peptides, also known as host defense peptides, display various antiviral effects against the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). In our research group, de novo designed peptides were developed based on structural features of naturally occurring antimicrobial peptides that show anti-HIV activity in vitro. In the present work, the immunomodulatory properties of these peptides have been characterized and an approach towards a transplastomic plant production platform was conducted.
