The thesis analyses the water cycle of forests and the exchange of water between single trees, the soil, and the atmosphere using computer simulations. The simulations use a three-dimensional model of the trees which calculates the water flow pathway from the roots to the leaves through the xylem numerically. The model allows to analyse the differences of water usage between the tree species beech, lime, and ash, as well as the impact of tree species mixtures on the water cylce of the whole stand. One interest of the thesis was to use terrestrial laser scans of single trees and to develope a software that uses the laser scans as input data of functional-structural models of the soil-plant-atmosphere system.
