Abstract:
Aryl polyene lipids (APELs), 1,8-dihydroxynaphthalene (DHN)-melanin, and anthraquinone (AQ) are polyketides produced by pathogenic bacteria or fungi. APELs are built by aryl polyene (APE) type II polyketide synthases (PKSs) in most Gram-negative bacteria, DHN-melanin is a virulence factor in Aspergillus fumigatus, and AQ is present in Photorhabdus laumondii. This work provides mechanistic insights into their biosynthesis on a structural level and builds the foundation for further studies and the...     »
