The factors influencing formaldehyde emissions of lean-burn gas engines were investigated in this paper. Complying with Germany’s TA Luft limits for nitric oxides’ emissions, in-engine formation of formaldehyde by incomplete oxidation of fuel-gas escaping from crevices adjacent to the combustion chamber during the expansion stroke dominates for advanced ignition. With decreasing spark advance the exhaust temperature rises and oxidation processes in the exhaust system get increasingly important regarding formaldehyde emissions. The dominating factor, however, is the crevices’ volume.
