Recent gravimetric satellite missions moved temporal variations of the Earth’s gravity field into focus. Therefore, this work investigates the modelling of the most interesting mass variations in the atmosphere and hydrosphere in detail. Additionally, the question of the detectability of these variations is studied. Phenomena of high relevance for climate studies are revealed in the variations. The potential and the limitations of the observability of these phenomena by satellites are analyzed within a simulation model.
