Beech and spruce seedlings grew in soils with different precipitation histories. Under drought conditions, fungal communities from dry regions changed the least. Root system structure was important for seedling drought tolerance, and mycorrhization can influence it. After five drought years, recovery of the fine-root system was prioritised in mature beech and spruce. In spruce, the belowground C transport rate recovered immediately and C was increasingly allocated to the fine-roots. Root-associated fungal communities remained unchanged in the first few months.
