Flexibility, data distribution, and the scale of business processes impose challenges for Workflow Management Systems (WFMS). Thus, we develop a distributed formulation and corresponding geo-scale WFMS for data-centric workflows based on the publish/subscribe (pub/sub) paradigm; we present two mappings of data-centric workflows into Workflow Units, which communicate over pub/sub, verify their correctness, and evaluate their performance. We also propose an approach for multi-user transactions in pub/sub to enable horizontal scaling of WFMSs.
