Thermal modification of indigenous wood provides an alternative to wood preservation by heavy metal containing chemicals and the use of imported wood species. The study investigates NIR spectroscopy as a method for quality assurance and process monitoring of thermally modified wood. Besides off-line measurements, in-line measurements in a laboratory scale kiln were performed. The results show, that the evaluation of physical and mechanical properties of sound samples is possible. Further, classification of the treatment intensity can be done. The mass loss during the thermal modification of wood can be determined quantitatively by using a fibre probe. Thus, the method can be used for process monitoring of thermally modified wood.
