This thesis investigated the development of islet autoimmunity in children at high risk for type 1 diabetes, and what pre, peri and postnatal factors are associated with a risk for islet autoantibodies in these children. Furthermore, the study was aimed to determine whether maternal diabetes as well as factors associated with maternal diabetes increase the risk of childhood overweight. The risk of islet autoimmunity is decreased in children of mothers with type 1 diabetes compared to children of fathers with type 1 diabetes. Birthweight, maternal HbA1c in third trimester and an early introduction of solid food were found to be associated with an islet autoantibody risk in these children. Maternal diabetes is not an independent predictor of overweight during childhood, but factors associated with maternal type 1 diabetes, such as short duration of breastfeeding and high birth size, predispose children to overweight during childhood.
