When developing or reengineering technical products, e.g. in machine and plant engineering, established solutions and components exist. However, accessing these solutions both within a company or across several companies is often made difficult by different vocabularies, by varying ways of navigating this knowledge and by multiple forms of documentation. Therefore, the support of an efficient and effective retrieval of solutions is of particular relevance to efficient engineering design.
To reach this goal, this thesis proposes several ontologies tailored to capture and process the semantic correlations between the concepts necessary for solution retrieval. For that purpose technical problems and their solutions are connected on different levels of abstraction with functions as the core elements. These function-oriented ontologies are applied in two use-cases to demonstrate their value and potential.
