Abscisic acid represents the central stress hormone in plants and is essential for the adaptation to a changing environment. The cloning of the GCA2-locus was accomplish in this work. The ABA-insensitive mutant gca2-1 exhibits pleiotropic ABA-insensitive phenotypes. The GCA2 gene encodes a calcium depending protein kinase and possess, as a new negative regulator of the ABA-signal transduction, a key function in the adaptation to external stimuli. GCA2 physically interacts with a family of ABA-receptors and is presumably an integrator of the plant stress response. The specific binding of the plant hormone to this novel class of ABA receptors could be demonstrated by isothermal titration calorimetry.
