Tmem51 is upregulated in CD8 T cells derived from chronic infection. In acute infection, overexpression of it leads to downregulation of effector cytokine production without impacting T cell development. Exhausted CD8 T cells in chronic infection cannot be reactivated by deletion of Tmem51. PTPN2 was known to impact exhausted CD8 T cells subsets in chronic infection. In acute infection, deficiency of PTPN2 improves T cell survival by rendering T cells less dependent on survival-promoting cytokines.
