Kozakia (K.) baliensis produces a homopolysaccharide (levan) from sucrose. In this study it was demonstrated that K. baliensis DSM 14400 and NBRC 16680 additionally produce a new, so far not characterized heteropolysaccharide (HePS), composed of glucose, galactose, mannose and glucuronic acid, with a xanthan-like structure. Via whole genome sequencing of both strains, corresponding HePS clusters, showing high similarity to the gum-cluster of xanthan, could be characterized. Finally, hints on the possible ecological role of the produced HePS were found and an overview of the HePS cluster genes in AAB in general could be obtained.
