In the present thesis we investigated the function of mig-6 and its relation to the HER receptors in melanoma development and progression as well as hepatocyte proliferation in vivo. Here we could show that HER3 serves as a novel marker for the prognosis of melanoma. In addition, we could show that HER3 is essential for the proliferation, migration and invasion of human melanoma cells. In contrast, mig-6 seems to be a tumor suppressor of melanomagenesis. Furthermore, we characterized mig-6 as a negative regulator of the EGFR in hepatocytes and in liver carcinomas.
