This work proposes metrics measuring aspects of an application landscape as an instrument in managing application landscapes. Its aim is to make application landscape management more systematic, and render goals and their achievement more accessible to business.
The work presents an empirical analysis of the environment, in which metrics for application landscapes are used. It surveys acceptance, potential and usage scenarios of application landscape metrics. The analysis results form the basis of guidelines for application landscape metrics.
As an example, the work introduces two metrics-based methodologies concerned with failure propagation in an application landscape. A case study applies these methodologies at a large bank. The case study compares proposals for limiting failure propagation. It provided the stakeholders with improved insights into the effects of the proposals, demonstrating the benefit of application landscape metrics.
