There is convincing evidence that atherosclerosis has typical features of an inflammatory disease. Local inflammation in the artery wall is accompanied by a systemic low-grade inflammatory response, which can be measured by C-reactive protein (CRP). This work investigated the influence of genetic variation in thirteen innate immunity genes on CRP plasma concentrations in myocardial infarction survivors and assessed the genetic impact of the within-subject variability. Therefore, CRP was measured repeatedly and 114 polymorphisms were genotyped and statistically analyzed. The obtained associations contribute to the understanding of the genetics of CRP in a population at high risk, especially in terms of gene-environment interactions.
