Ecophysiological and phytopathological investigations were carried out on black alder trees (
Alnus glutiosa) infected with the aggressiv pathogen
Phytophthora alni in order to get insight on the impact of the infection on tree physiology and biochemical parameters. Gas exchange of leaves, twig water potential, xylem flow, carbonhydrate and nutrient contents of foliage were accessed on adult naturally infected trees and on stem inoculated three-year-old container plants. Ecophysiological and biochemical results were linked. Computertomography was used to clarify, whether the bark-infection by the pathogen leads to an impairment of adjacent xylem tissue. Therefore the water saturation of the trunk of diseased trees was visualised.
