The focus of this thesis is the "Optimal Planning Problem" of decentralised battery storage in distribution grids, with emphasis on improving integration of distributed PV. A number of modelling tools are developed, including a novel planning algorithm labelled the Two Stage Algorithm, capable of solving the planning problem for large distribution grids. The Two Stage Algorithm is used for further investigation including: a detailed cost analysis, consideration of over-voltage in the grid, and an evaluation of placement strategies.
