Abstract:
A combination of preliminary design methods has been developed to model Coanda flaps as integral part of a flapless flight control system based on active flow control. Interacting submodels of the engine (GasTurb), the ducts (Quasi-1D-CFD) and the Coanda flap (2D RANS, VLM) finally enable a flight dynamic simulation (6DOF) for performance assessment. A comparison with conventional plain flaps in the context of a low aspect ratio flying-wing configuration delivers insight into overall system effectiveness and efficiency.
