The present study seeks to offer a coherent theoretical account of the ESDP’s emergence, institutional design and relationship with NATO through the application of a theory drawn from comparative politics, Historical Institutionalism. In so doing, the study seeks to situate the ESDP in both time and space; in time, by emphasizing the importance of previous institutional arrangements for understanding subsequent ones (e.g. through so-called “path dependency”); and in space by considering the role and impact of the ESDP's inter-relationship with other institutional structures, both within the EU’s single institutional framework (e.g. Coreper) and beyond it (e.g. NATO).      «

Die vorliegende Arbeit bietet eine kohärente theoretische Erklärung der Entstehung der ESVP, ihres institutionellen Aufbaus und ihrer Beziehungen mit der NATO. Sie bezieht sich dabei auf die theoretischen Annahmen des Historischen Institutionalismus. Die Arbeit verortet die ESVP in zeitlicher und räumlicher Dimension. Die zeitliche Dimension berücksichtigt die Bedeutung von vorangegangenen institutionellen Entscheidungen für das Verständnis von späteren Entwicklungen (etwa durch so genannte Pfadabhängigkeiten). Die räumliche Dimension analysiert die Beziehungen zu anderen Institutionen - innerhalb der EU (etwa zu Coreper) und außerhalb (etwa zur NATO).      «
