Microbial hydrocarbons represent a sustainable alternative to the use of hydrocarbons obtained from fossil oil. In this work, the natural olefin production in
Micrococcus luteus as well as the phylogenetical distribution within the order
Micrococcales could be described. Simultaneously, key reactions and regulation schemes of the substrates providing pathways could be determined and applied to the optimization of olefin synthesis. Details of the substrate specificity of OleA could be acquired. This work provides the basis for the economical production of one type of microbial hydrocarbons.
