The thesis deals with the impact of carbon storage in harvested wood products (HWP) on the greenhouse gas (GHG) balance in Germany. Methods for calculating the products’ pool, both existing and developed in the course of this work, are analysed and integrated into a new approach for the consideration of HWP within the context of international climate policy. As a result, a computer-based model, the WoodCarbonMonitor, is presented. It allows the contribution of the material wood use to be estimated for climate protection through the storage of carbon, thereby laying the basis for the annual reporting of the impact of HWP in the national GHG-balance.
