The study shows, how far the physiological flow of the human heart can be reproduced by a mechanical support system. On base of extensive flow measurements, a new index could be developed, which can be requisitioned for the interpretation and development of pump chambers for artificial heart systems and displacement pumps in general. Goal of the work was to minimize complications, especially thrombembolism, by means of improved pump chambers. Therefore, novel, ventricle-shaped chambers were developed on base of MRI-data of the human heart. Extensive flow measurements with PIV an birifringent fluid were carried out to obtain velocity information, shear stress and vorticity. The study is based on the development of a novel, completely implantable ventricular assist device at the German Aerospace Center (DLR). The paper describes the integration and testing of the new, ventricle shaped chambers into the novel assist device.
