Mesophase carbon as an innovative new material is normally used to produce carbon fibres. With a specially treated mesophase a sinterable powder was developed in order to produce pistons for the motor construction. The structure of the graphitized material looks like conventional graphite but shows a higher transverse rupture strength. A further advantage is the possibility to press it near shape with less cost intensive refinishing work. Until now there is less information available about the behaviour of wear and friction of sinterable mesophase carbon. So this work examines the tribological characteristics of the ceramic against several materials like GG25 and various hardened and not hardened steels. Friction and wear are simulated on a pin on disk experimental rig. The Mesophase always is used as pin and the metal as disk. Testing parameters are several sliding velocities, face pressures and temperatures. The variation of the structural parameters of the tribological system consists of the compacting pressure, the sintering process and the filler material. Several surface hardnesses and surface roughnesses of the disk are studied. Oil and fullerenes as lubricants and theirs behaviours on the tribological system are explored. An analysis of filled mesophase powder shows the influence of fullerenes and copper powder on compacting and sintering.
