The aim this work was the study the mechanism of high-pressure induced growth inhibition and cell death distinguishing primary from secondary and reversible from irreversible pressure effects. Primary pressure effects occur fast during the build-up time of pressure and are often reversible. These changes are related to or initiated by changes of the phase behaviour and permeability of cytoplasmic membranes, the inactivation of multi-drug transport enzymes and intracellular organization. Cell division is reversible inhibited at low pressure. Primary effects sensitise the cells to secondary events. Secondary events depend on the environmental conditions during and after pressure treatment and determine the pressure resistance.
