Art technological research and debates about painting materials and painting techniques have a tradition in Munich that dates back to the 19th century.
Adolf Wilhelm Keim, who gained prominence in connection with mineral paints, was a pioneer of institutional research in this area.
New written sources reveal not only his initiative in establishing a science of painting techniques, which was then introduced at the Technical University in Munich in 1903, but also document the causes of numerous controversies and conflicts with artists, with the paint industry and with the professors Gustav Schultz, Alexander Eibner and Ernst Berger, as well as the outstanding role played by the Deutsches Museum in this whole field.
