Abstract:

Opening a company’s innovation management for external sources of innovations (what is known as “Open Innovation“) is a trend that has recently become more important for both business and science. Ideas competitions provide one possibility – among others – to collect and use the collective “Wisdom of Crowds“ within these virtual communities of innovators. However, there are no empirical findings regarding how the structure and procedure of an ideal ideas competition can be used as an organizational model for future ideas competitions. In addition, only very little scientific knowledge exists concerning the systematic development and implementation of virtual communities for innovations – named “Community Building for Innovations”. This work addresses these two gaps in research and examines with an action research approach the ideas competition as a method for “Community Building for Innovations“ in the context of an ERP-software company.
