FRM II has to convert its nuclear fuel to a uranium enrichment which is significantly lower than the current 93 %. As part of this conversion, new fuel types are being evaluated such as uranium-molybdenum (UMo) powder. Industrial fabrication of UMo powders is conducted by means of atomization. In the course of this work, a prototype UMo atomizer was designed, constructed, and commissioned in cooperation with AREVA. The atomizer principle is based on the rotating electrode process (REP). The produced UMo powder was characterised using granulometry, chemical analysis, and microscopy. It fully complied with fuel specifications.
