The motivation for this work resulted from the well-know problem of information floot and the resulting necessity of efficient tools for purposeful provision, organization and exchange of information. In order to become fair these requirements, in this work a concept for a knowledge-based search and literature management is presented. With the system BibRelEx, which was prototypically realized, users can explore a bibliographic database by visualizing, and exploiting, content-based relations among its entries. All users actively working in a scientific area can customize their information spaces by adding their own views as private information. The aggregation of public annotations contributed by expert users represents insight into the area that exceeds the knowledge that is represented in the documents themselves.
