Fungi produce enzymes to convert polysaccharides into fermentable sugars. However, the substrate-fungus relationship remains poorly understood. This thesis investigated the substrates’ influence on the fungal performance and the fungal perception of substrate impurities (e.g. mannan). The results indicated that crystallinity, hemicellulose content, bioavailability and species-specific regulatory networks are major determinants of substrate performance. Moreover, they provided evidence of inhibitive overlap between cellulose and mannan perception pathways in several filamentous fungi.

Pilze produzieren Enzyme, um Polysaccharide in fermentierbare Zucker umzuwandeln. Die Beziehung zwischen Substrat und Pilz ist jedoch noch wenig verstanden. Diese Arbeit untersuchte den Einfluss der Substrate auf die pilzliche Proteinproduktion und die Wahrnehmung von Substratverunreinigungen (z.B. Mannan). Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Kristallinität, Hemicellulosegehalt, Bioverfügbarkeit und artspezifische regulatorische Netzwerke wichtige Determinanten der Effizienz des Substratabbaus sind. Darüber hinaus lieferen die Daten den Nachweis einer hemmenden Überlappung zwischen Cellulose- und Mannan-Wahrnehmung bei mehreren filamentösen Pilzen.
