Abstract:
This thesis evaluates the potential of two agroforestry systems to help meet farmers’ needs in eastern Panama. Data were obtained from farmer interviews and an extended cost-benefit analysis. Using robust, multi-objective optimisation, the thesis explores the role of agroforestry in diversified land-use portfolios that reduce trade-offs between various farm-level goals under uncertainty. Results suggest that while agroforestry may help reconcile a broad set of socio-economic and ecological goals, tree-based systems that better meet farmers’ cash flow and food security needs will be essential for greater uptake of agroforestry in the study area.
