Under current climate change scenarios, validation of drought indices is of paramount importance, since the frequency and intensity of droughts are likely to increase. The thesis contributes a comprehensive comparison of drought indices, by validating them against various environmental datasets, such as tree ring, streamflow and carbon flux data on the European and regional scales. Furthermore, the potential of a satellite-based vegetation index to act as a proxy for drought studies was examined by linking it with tree ring data on a global scale.
