For forestry purposes, the forestry mapping in the 1:10.000 scale is indispensable and traditionally relies on the analysis of aerial photographic data. New sensors (IKONOS generation) as well as recent software development (eCognition) allow alternative procedures to increase automatic information extraction from digital imagery for forestry purposes. Methods as well as theoretical backgrounds are shown within the context of the protection-forest areas of the bavarian alps, using 3 case studies to clarify and discuss. In perspective-view, the meaning of an object oriented analysis is reviewed to enable the construction of landscape-modelling up to scenario-development. The assumption is to apply scenario's as an 'a-priori' reference for remote sensing output, used within an overall monitoring concept.
