A handheld probe for non-invasive optoacoustic imaging has been developed for clinical diagnostic imaging. The probe enables visualization of optical absorption contrast at tissue depths up to 30 mm below the skin surface with resolutions of up to 150µm. Initial results from healthy human volunteers reveal optical features of the thyroid, the cardio-vascular system and of muscles at resolutions previously not available. A second configuration and method, designed for intraoperative assessment of tissue viability, enables capturing oxygenation and perfusion of tissue during surgery.
