The inherent thrombogenicity of synthetic vascular grafts limits their field of application and their long-term success. In contrast, the luminal surface of blood vessels is lined with an optimal antithrombogenic surface of endothelial cells. The present work presents a novel technology based on the use of magnetic fields to obtain tissue engineered vascular grafts. Vascular cells are loaded with clinically approved superparamagnetic nanoparticles and delivered onto the luminal surface of tubular grafts by means of magnetic forces. The hybrid grafts produced combine the mechanical properties of synthetic biomaterials with the antithrombogenic properties of the endothelium.
