The liquefaction of hydrogen is a cost effective way to distribute hydrogen fuel. The aim of this work is the development of efficient and economically viable large-scale hydrogen liquefaction processes. The implemented process simulation and cost estimation models are used to optimize the capital and operating expenses. Two novel process concepts for large-scale hydrogen liquefaction are presented. Compared to state-of-the-art plants, the specific liquefaction costs are reduced by nearly 68% and the specific energy consumption by nearly 40%.
