The central question of the present work is how cabin heating of diesel engine powered passenger cars can be secured without adverse effect on fuel efficiency and emissions. Therefore, the influence of different engine operating modes of an automotive diesel engine on coolant heat flux, effective engine power, fuel consumption and exhaust gas composition are investigated. As a result, both engine operating strategies and design guidelines for thermal management systems are derived from the findings.
