The system of a steam generation process with an extraction condensing turbine was examined coupled with a drying unit as heat consumer. A low temperature conveyor dryer proved suitable for green crops. An optimization of the energy consumption of the dryer was determined by using a computer program. This optimum could be verified with measurements on a single-tray dryer and on an experimental conveyor dryer. The investment and operating costs for a low temperature dryer with a water evaporation of 15 t/h were determined. Economic viability analysis with a 37 MW(th) combined heat and power plant indicated that low pressure steam should only be used if requirements of the product quality make an indirect dehydration necessary.
