The core of this thesis is formed by routing and dimensioning issues in dynamic satellite networks. The considered systems, aiming at global narrowband and broadband communications, are based on constellations of circulating satellites in low and medium earth orbits, where the satellites are connected by RF or optical intersatellite links (ISLs) to form a meshed backbone network in the space segment. First, an ATM-based concept for connection-oriented communication and a dynamic routing framework are developed. Based on that at general method for optimal capacity dimensioning of ISL networks is presented. All concepts and methods are evaluated in qualitative and quantitative manner.
