In order to examine questions about the future system architecture of GIS, the using of new data types (3D, 4D, Multimedia) for information modeling and -working in GIS and the role and suitability of extensive metadata concepts in GIS, it was necessary to create a reference database for an interdisciplinary GIS research at the Technical University of Munich and to keep it up. Within the scope of this work, especially extended meta-data structures for heterogeneous and sectored geo-spatial database in GIS have been investigated and applied in relation to the already mentioned questions. This has been carried out in order to secure the lasting utilization of the aspired research platform for future projects.
