The focus of this dissertation is the investigation of the combustion conditions on the NO
x emissions generated during the combustion process as well as the formation of deposits on heat exchanger surfaces. The majority of fuels used were untreated and treated biogenic residues in an entrained flow reactor. In some cases, air staging reduced NO
x emissions by more than 75%, whereat the nitrogen remaining in the residual coke of the reduction zone significantly influences NO
x reduction. Extensive laboratory and reactor tests enabled the fouling and slagging tendency to be examined and evaluated on the basis of deposition samples.
