Bacterial exopolysaccharide (EPS) producers were screened on lignocellulose hydrolysate. Paenibacillus 2H7 was selected for 500 ml fermentations. The furfural concentration correlated with the onset of the exponential phase and an improved fermentation strategy for the 7 l scale was devised. The fungal EPSs of S. rolfsii and S. commune were produced fermentatively. Poor EPS solubility after precipitation hampered all analyses. Therefore, a quantitative fluorometric assay was developed to replace precipitation.
