Abstract:

Aim of this study was the investigation of injection molding and extrusion as suitable processes for the manufacturing of wavy fiber reinforced elastomers. Injection molding of crimped short fibers along with thermoplastic elastomers led to curved short fibers in the injection molded parts but without the characteristic progressive stress-strain relationship in tensile tests. Extrusion of endless crimped fiber reinforced thermoplastic elastomers produced the specified characteristic mechanical behavior and melt viscosity turned out to be a determining parameter for the resulting waviness in the extruded strands.
