Atopic dermatitis (AD) is an inflammatory skin condition in which Staphylococcus aureus strains proliferate in disrupted skin microbiomes, increasing infection risks. Our study analyzed S. aureus genetic and functional differences in AD versus healthy individuals, finding AD strains show homogenous genetic traits and antibiotic resistance driven by horizontal gene transfer. Besides, prophages significantly impact the genetic diversity and pathogenicity of these strains, suggesting their profiling could advance AD diagnosis and treatment.
